Scaling Up Nutrition in the Philippines

As part of the celebration of the National Nutrition Month, the Philippine Coalition of Advocates for Nutrition Security, Inc. (PhilCAN) invited civil society organizations to a roundtable titled “Scaling Up Nutrition in the Philippines”, on July 27, 2016 from 11am to 5pm at the Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City.

The activity aimed to gather civil society actors who contribute to the elimination of hunger and malnutrition. We believe that eliminating hunger and achieving good nutrition depend on effective actions across sectors.

Despite the unprecedented economic growth rate in recent years, the country ranks poorly in addressing hunger and malnutrition:
●    twenty-ninth in terms of hunger incidence; an estimated 3.8 million households suffered from hunger at least once during the last quarter of 2014
●    second most undernourished population in Southeast Asia; an estimated 15.6 million people suffering from a lack of adequate food and nutrition
●    ninth in the world in stunted growth among children; an estimated 7.36 million children are malnourished, with some 4 million suffering from stunted growth

In 2014, the Philippines was the 51st country to join the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement which is founded on the principle that all people have a right to food and good nutrition. It unites people—from governments, civil society, the United Nations, donors, businesses and researchers—in a collective effort to improve nutrition.  To date, there are 57 countries signed up.

In line with this, civil society alliances are being formed in the different SUN countries.  PhilCAN, in partnership with UNICEF Philippines and National Nutrition Council, is initiating efforts to organize civil society networks to work together to improve nutrition in the country.

The Philippine Coalition of Advocates for Nutrition Security, Inc. (PHILCAN) is presently composed of 12 member organizations with programs, projects and interventions on nutrition. The coalition has been in existence for more than 19 years and has served as an advocacy group to move forward the agenda of improved nutrition among vulnerable and marginalized populations served by its member organizations in various areas in the country. Through community- and school-based interventions, applied research, innovations and modeling, it has been recognized as one of the leading organizations focused on nutrition security.
